Audrey Totter in Lady in the Lake  (Robert Montgomery, 1947), based on Raymond Chandler’s novel.

This film is an experiment in using the camera objectively. We don’t ever see detective Philip Marlowe except for his reflection in a mirror. Otherwise we see what he sees. And what he sees for this first 20 minutes or so is Audrey Totter as Miss Fromsett. Her performance is sensational.  – self-aware, humorous, supremely confident. She takes a rather dreary film and fluffs it up, slaps it about and runs away with it. Her double takes are particularly funny, rivalling the late Bea Arthur.
